Painting on Wood Ideas

Before the use of steel as a medium for art, wood has already been there as a favorite canvas for artists of prehistoric times. Humans have always had affinity with wooden products so it is no surprise that up to this day, many still look and study wood as an art canvas and as a material for their works.

When painting, fabric is usually the material used for canvas, but it is also a common habit among many artists to use wooden boards. This is especially the case for hobbyists who like to put new life into their old wooden pieces. Painting them anew is usually the solution for such revival problems. The difficulty of painting on wood depends on the kind of wood that you are painting on and its state (whether it is already treated or not).

If it is not yet treated, then have a wood expert treat it. This process includes applying sun paper to make the surface smoother.

If you are just beginning in this kind of art, you can first work with stencils to create what you want to create on the wooden panel. There are a number of self-adhesive stencils out there or, if your stencil does not have adhesive, you can just pick a can of temporary stencil adhesive and use it to stabilize your stencil on your wooden board. Always--always--remember to try out drawing and mixing colors on a piece of paper first so that you will know what you do before you work with the real thing. As for brushes, a regular stencil brush will already do.
