When a child asks a doctor what he does, the doctor just shows the child people who are sick and tells the child that he treats the sick. A teacher, meanwhile, tells the child that he teaches them at school so that they learn. Then an architect, well, he just shows the child a house and tells him that he designs houses for a living. For urban planners, this is very difficult because it takes more than a single act, a single entity, or a single structure, to fully explain the job entailed by urban planners. In fact, have you ever seen urban planners featuring in short stories about kids and professions?
It's ironic that urban planners are hardly seen to be people who relate to the general people, when the people themselves live inside the communities that planners designed. So why is it that people claim they could not relate to urban planners at all? Your guess is as good as mine. More interestingly, the work of urban planners go beyond what is functional and economical for the general population. The ultimate goal of urban planners is to create spaces that are livable and sustainable. This is where the planners' sense of art comes in. In order to be livable and notable, a city has to be aesthetically pleasing. There's got to be balance and possibly symmetry from the high-density areas in the middle outwards to the suburbs in the fringe areas. It takes a lot more artistic sense that what you may think. Then there are those art pieces whose theme actually revolve around urban planning and the city life. From art pieces during the middle ages to cities built on large pizzas, these art pieces prove that city living (and consequently, urban planning) is far from being irrelevant in our lives. As the world gets more and more urbanized with a larger fraction of the population living in the cities, how can you deny the relevance of this topic?
