Even before Barbie was created to become the staple favorite toy of little girls, dolls have already been there to be their companions. They served to become a girl's first best friend, teaching her the initial steps in order to develop her social skills. But how were dolls created even before the creation of Barbie?
There was no need for those expensive plastic dolls in the old days. Back then, rag dolls already served that purpose, with most of these dolls created from scratch by the girls' own parents. Mothers haven't exactly heard of the term "recycling" but this was what they exactly did when they created the dolls from the used fabric. Don't you think it would be nice to create this idea again and sew your own rag doll for your daughter? Today's rag dolls do not even have to be as plain as what they used to be in the past. There are now so many available materials out there (they do not have to be created from scrap fabric anymore!) that you can use with your rag dolls so that you can make them as varied as possible. But if you really want to do it the classic way, then by all means, do it. Try as many material out there as possible. Patterns are not exactly difficult either. The main body of the doll could be drawn as a rectangle, with the head represented as a circle on top of that rectangle. Put the pattern on the double fabric with the right sides facing outwards, and draw the outline of the doll based on the pattern. Stitch around the drawn pattern, leaving the bottom of the doll completely unstitched. Cut the body 1/4 inch away from the inches, clip the corners, and turn outside out. Put in the stuffing inside the head and the body until full. Stitch afterwards. Do the same for the legs and the arms. These are typically as long as the entire body of the doll, but slightly narrower. Do the patterns, stitch it, and turn inside out before stuffing it with cotton. Attach it afterwards unto the appropriate section of the dolls. You can of course play around the ratio of the limb length and width, to make it as whimsical as you like. You can even use the patterns you initially used to create the clothes for your doll. You can talk about...
