The Two Facets of Every Craft Work

Thank author of this post/comment

Everything creative that you do always has two facets two it. The first one is all about art, or the aesthetics of your work. Is your work pleasing to the eye? Does it represent the goals that you have in mind when you first created the art piece? The other facet is science. There is always a technical side to every art and it is the job of this facet to make sure that this is complied with. What colors do you mix to get that resulting color? At what angle should you place your camera to achieve maximum photographic effect?

More often than not, you see aspiring artists becoming technically good at what they do but are apparently not able to put in a spirit into their works. As a result, they become technically competent yet unable to be artistically excellent. There are those who are artistically good yet remain technically incompetent in their works, but the former case more often than the latter one.

This is more prevalent in art forms where there is a mechanical device involved to create the craft, such as photography for example. Unlike, say, painting or sculpture, there is this mechanical tool that a photographer has to use in order to take photographs. In contrast, in painting, all that is between the artist and the craft is a brush and the canvas. There's little technicality needed here and most work will come from the user's own creativity.

When you are an artist, you should strive to be competent in both facets of creating art. Not only you should be able to come out with works that are technically superior, but you should also be able to come out with artworks that bring out your artistic capabilities. Take time to excel in both areas and you will see yourself rewarded in this artistic field in the future.
